Patriotic Patties: Creative Burgers for Your July 4th Cookout

July 4th is right around the corner. Celebrate your independence from “the ordinary” with these patriotic burger recipes. Pair them with a delicious summer sangria or home-brewed beer for a star-spangled smorgasbord.

Red White and Blue Burgers

It’s a July Fourth staple. This burger from Tablespoon keeps it cheesy with mozzarella and bleu cheeses, complemented with savory roasted red peppers.

What You Need:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 8 hamburger buns
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 2 red peppers, roasted and peeled
  • 4 oz bleu cheese crumbles
  • Salt and pepper

What to Do:

  1. For roasted red peppers, place peppers on grill over gas burner on high for about five minutes, turning occasionally until the pepper skin is very charred. Remove peppers and place in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let steam for ten minutes.
  2. Remove peppers and peel off skin. It should come off pretty easily, and it’s okay if some skin is left on. Slice stems off of peppers and remove seeds, then slice.
  3. Form burgers into quarter-pound rounds and make a small indent in each burger with your thumb. Season well with salt and pepper.
  4. Grill burgers over high heat for 3-4 minutes. Flip burgers, cook for another 2 minutes or so, and then add a slice of fresh mozzarella to each burger.
  5. Close the lid on the grill to help the cheese melt. Let cheese melt for a minute, then add pepper slices and bleu cheese. Cook for another minute. That should leave you with about a medium burger. Cook longer if you want your burger more done.
  6. Serve burger on a toasted bun.

The Patriotic Burger

It takes a special kind of person to enjoy potato chips on a hamburger. The Patriotic Burger from Dinner at the Zoo takes you back to summer barbecues as a kid with its classic flavors.

What You Need:

  • 1 1/4 lbs ground beef
  • 1 1/2 c sliced tomatoes
  • 4 oz fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced
  • 3/4 lb purple potatoes
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Salt and pepper
  • Cooking spray

What to Do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and coat with cooking spray. Slice the purple potatoes very thinly with a mandolin or a sharp knife. Lay the potato slices in a single layer on the pan; season with salt and pepper. Coat the tops of the potato slices with cooking spray. Bake the potatoes for 15 minutes or until the tops start to brown (it might take longer depending on the size of your potatoes).
  2. While the potatoes are cooking, prepare the burgers. Heat a pan or your barbecue to medium-high heat. Divide the meat evenly into 4 parts; shape into patties. Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side depending on your desired level of doneness.
  3. Toast the hamburger buns; place the burgers on top. Add the tomatoes, then mozzarella slices, then potato chips on top. Secure with a toothpick if needed.

Any burger can become a patriotic masterpiece with the right toppings. Here are some other creative ideas to turn your burgers into July 4th specials.

The Uncle Sam: Add barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese, and grilled onion rings to the top of your patty. It’s better than paying taxes.

Firework Favorite: If you have some spice lovers in your crowd, top your burger with jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo.

Grilling out on July 4th should be mandatory, but until it is, we recommend setting a good example, inviting over friends and neighbors, and celebrating with the best burgers possible. Happy 4th of July!
