HARDSCAPE HERO

HARDSCAPE HERO Mike Halliday

Meet December’s Hardscape Hero, Mike Halliday of Bluehill Landscapes.

Mike Halliday of Bluehill Landscapes brings 15 years of experience and ICPI certification to hardscape projects in and around Charlottesville, VA. Mike and the Bluehill team’s specific area of expertise is in patios, walls, decorative concrete.

His most recent project was an elevated patio that featured a freestanding seat wall and steps. The owners were so happy with the results, they hired Bluehill Landscaping to build a new patio behind the house. As an additional challenge, all the materials for the project had to be wheel barreled through a 3 foot wide gate down a wood ramp!

This elegant backyard hardscape uses Eagle Bay CottageStone pavers and coping stones in James River as well as a HighLand Stone freestanding seat wall and fire pit.

During the planning stages, Mike worked closely with the homeowners to give them the dream backyard they had envisioned. Mike involved them in every decision of the project, making sure that everything down to the smallest details fit the homeowners’ expectations. The clients especially loved the shape and color options from Eagle Bay, and were eager to get to the final product – so Mike’s crew worked hard and diligently throughout each phase of the project so the homeowners could enjoy their new backyard as soon as possible.

Mike’s Hardscape Planning Advice

I think the best time to plan a hardscape project is in the winter. This allows you plenty of time to find the right contractor so that you can get the project started in early spring before your chosen contractor gets very busy.”

Mike added that the winter in his area provides a clear view of property so you can see all the areas you might want to improve, that may be covered by extensive foliage or plant growth during the growing season.

One more reason to start planning in the winter? According to Mike, “if you plan in the winter and install in early spring you have all summer and fall to enjoy the new outdoor living space!”
